Branca Menta is a proprietary Italian mint-flavoured herbal liqueur built on the Fernet-Branca herb-and-spice formula with added peppermint.
Cooling peppermint leads, intense and menthol-bright, over a subdued bitter-herbal amaro base; sweetness runs high and rounds off the bitterness.
Reached for when a drink needs mint carried on genuine amaro complexity rather than a plain mint cordial, it works as a mint-amaro accent or a defining base. High sugar makes it viscous and syrupy, so it is commonly served chilled or over ice, which dilutes and balances the sweetness in the glass.
No plain mint liqueur reproduces it: crème de menthe gives mint without the amaro complexity, and a straight amaro gives complexity without the mint. As a small accent, a mint liqueur combined with a bitter amaro approximates both the cooling peppermint aroma and the herbal backbone, with sugar syrup rebuilding the sweetness if the mint-amaro starting point is drier; where the combined bitter-Fernet-plus-mint signature is the base, it cannot be truly matched.
Fernet / bitter amaro
Brancamenta shares Fernet-Branca's herbal base but is sweeter, notably less bitter, lower in strength and dominated by peppermint; Fernet-Branca is drier, more bitter and higher-proof.
Crème de menthe
Crème de menthe is a simple sweetened mint liqueur with no bitter-amaro backbone; Brancamenta carries the complex bitter-herbal Fernet base beneath its mint.
Fratelli Branca of Milan produces it from the same multi-botanical base as Fernet-Branca, enriched with Piedmontese peppermint essential oil so that mint sits over a bitter-herbal backbone. Compared with Fernet-Branca it is distinctly sweeter and less bitter, with the peppermint dominant and the underlying bitter herbs subdued.
Produced by Fratelli Branca Distillerie of Milan as the mint version of its Fernet-Branca formula.
