Grapefruit soda is a sweetened, carbonated soft drink flavoured with grapefruit juice and/or grapefruit oil.
Tart and sweet in balance, carrying a distinct citrus grapefruit character over a fizzy body.
Poured in bulk as a top-up, it lengthens a drink while supplying carbonation, sweetness, acidity and grapefruit aroma all at once, so it acts as far more than a neutral diluent; a smaller splash serves purely as a grapefruit accent. Sugar-sweetened and artificially sweetened versions differ in body and aftertaste, and it is best added last to preserve lift.
A less-sweet or unsweetened grapefruit carbonate works if sweetness is rebuilt with sugar syrup; the grapefruit aroma itself cannot be faked from a lemon-lime or orange soda and must come from grapefruit, while plain soda water can restore only the carbonation and dilution.
Grapefruit sparkling water
Grapefruit soda is sweetened, carrying meaningful sweetness and body; grapefruit sparkling water is essentially carbonated water with grapefruit essence and little or no sugar, contributing dilution and aroma but negligible sweetness.
Grapefruit tonic
Plain grapefruit soda takes its edge from citric acid and grapefruit; a grapefruit tonic adds quinine bitterness, shifting the drink's balance.
It is built on carbonated water with a sweetener and grapefruit flavouring — a typical ingredient list runs carbonated water, sweetener, grapefruit juice from concentrate, citric acid and grapefruit oil. Juice content is generally low, ranging from under 2% to around 6%, and sweetening varies across the class from cane sugar to artificial sweeteners such as aspartame and acesulfame potassium.
Carbonation fades once opened or once batched, so it is best used fresh from a sealed container.
