Navy rum is a dark, full-bodied overproof rum style rooted in the British Royal Navy’s rum ration, traditionally blended from British Caribbean territories like Guyana, Barbados and Trinidad.

Strength and blend are both doing work here: 57% and a mix of styles built to stay audible under sugar and citrus. A single dark rum at ordinary strength gives neither, and the drink goes quiet before it goes wrong.

Overproof rum
Overproof is about strength, and may turn out to be a light pot-still rum at 63%. In a grog or Planter’s Punch the dark molasses depth of navy is gone while the proof jumps: pour about a quarter less.
Dark/blended aged rum
Navy rum is historically a specific style from the British Caribbean colonies, bottled at higher strength. Plain dark rum is only a color category, with no claim on strength or naval tradition — and at standard strength it leaves a grog noticeably weaker than intended.
