Description
Navy strength gin follows the same botanical distillation as any dry gin but is proofed to at least 57% alcohol, the traditional benchmark at which gunpowder soaked in the spirit would still ignite. The higher strength concentrates juniper and the supporting botanicals rather than changing the recipe.
Origin
The style is tied to the British Royal Navy, whose spirit rations were bottled strong enough that gunpowder wetted with the gin would still fire.
