German and Austrian schnaps is an unsweetened fruit brandy or eau de vie — fruit fermented and distilled, or infused in spirit and redistilled — with no added sugar or flavouring, whereas American-style peach schnapps is a sweetened, flavoured liqueur on neutral spirit. Both share the name, but in the English-speaking cocktail world 'schnapps' means the sweet flavoured-liqueur style.
