Unpeated, fruity and soft is the register, and peat is the thing that would break it. A lighter whisky of any origin keeps the drink where it was; a smoky one takes it over.
Often confused with
Islay single malt
Both are Scottish single malt, from opposite ends of the style range: Islay is the peated region, Speyside fruity and all but unpeated. Islay smoke takes over anything it goes into, which is the whole point of the choice.
A mix of malt and grain whisky from several distilleries, where a Speyside single malt is all barley malt from one — which is why it has more character. Blends are lighter and cheaper, and they disappear behind a sweet mixer.
