Low sugar and high strength are easy to match; the menthol, saffron and myrrh are not. As a barspoon accent another bitter bottle passes; as the base of a drink this one is the flavor itself and cannot be stood in for.
Often confused with
The broader family it belongs to: most of them are sweeter and far less bitter. Swapping one in leaves a drink that was built on the bitterness noticeably softer.
A sweeter mint liqueur from the same house. Both are mentholic, and this one brings sugar the original has not got, so the drink needs its syrup cut.
Description
It is stronger than most amari and much less sweet, and it spends a year in oak — which is why the bitterness is long rather than sharp.
