Substitutes for Liquore Strega
Hard to replace when its own minty, coniferous fennel-and-mint identity is the point of the drink; as a small accent, another spirit-strength herbal liqueur approximates the category, with sugar syrup covering the lost sweetness and body.
Often confused with
Yellow Chartreuse sits in the same herbal register, drier and more honeyed, and lacks the saffron. A drink built on Strega comes out cleaner and less golden with it. One for one by volume, with half a barspoon of syrup to make the sweetness up.
Also yellow, also anise and vanilla, but softer and without the piney edge: it swaps by volume, and the drink loses the resinous side Strega is chosen for.
