How it's used
A flavouring modifier that carries both banana aroma and substantial sweetness and body from its high sugar content. Stirred or shaken into the build, it is dosed sparingly as an aromatic accent or in larger measure where the banana flavour drives the drink, in which case its sweetness and syrupy weight must be accounted for.
Substitutes for Banana liqueur
Another banana-derived liqueur or ingredient, since the banana aroma is the defining contribution and cannot be reconstructed from an unrelated flavour. In an accent role the loss of any one dimension is tolerable, but as a substantial modifier the sweetness and syrupy body must also be matched — those generic contributions can be rebuilt with a neutral syrup and, if strength matters, a small measure of neutral spirit.

Cream liqueur
A crème liqueur such as crème de banane contains no dairy and takes its name from a high-sugar, syrupy consistency; a cream liqueur contains actual cream. The near-homophones 'crème' and 'cream' cause the confusion.
