Yellow Bird

Shake ∙ 3 min ∙ 13.8% ABV ∙

The Yellow Bird is a shaken tiki cocktail blending two rums with banana liqueur, Galliano, and citrus-tropical juices, served long in a Collins glass. Ripe banana and a warm anise glow from the Galliano lead, cut by tart lime and pineapple before a soft, juicy finish.

Instructions for 1 serving

  1. Pre-chill a glass
  2. Shake all ingredients with ice: Light gold rum 20 ml · White rum 20 ml · Banana liqueur 15 ml · Galliano L’Autentico liqueur 10 ml · Orange juice 45 ml · Pineapple juice 25 ml · Lime juice 5 ml
  3. Fine strain into the chilled glass
  4. Garnish with a pineapple wedge and a maraschino cherry on a skewer

Tips

  • Pre-chill the glass before straining so the drink stays cold despite having no ice in the finished pour.
  • Fine-strain after shaking to leave the citrus pulp and ice shards behind for a smoother, clearer pour.
  • Shake hard and briefly — the juices need full aeration to blend the two rums and Galliano into one balanced sip.

History

The Yellow Bird's origin is not firmly documented, and even its name is disputed. Written use of the name is traced to the Half Moon resort in Rose Hall, Jamaica, in the mid-1950s, where an early version reportedly mixed rum, coffee liqueur, banana liqueur, and orange juice, a build quite different from the modern formula. Some accounts instead point to Hawaii, suggesting the drink emerged at the Shell Bar in the Hawaiian Village resort, where a hit exotica recording of the tune "Yellow Bird" was said to be played regularly around 1961.

Sources disagree on why it carries the name. One explanation ties it to that song, an English-language rewrite of the 19th-century Haitian tune "Choucoune," popularized through Harry Belafonte's recording and reaching wider fame via Arthur Lyman's 1961 version. Others argue the name has nothing to do with the song and instead comes simply from the drink's bright yellow hue, produced by the golden Italian liqueur Galliano and its citrus juices.

The rum, Galliano, triple sec, and lime juice recipe now considered standard was heavily promoted through Galliano's own advertising in the early 1970s, including a multi-page placement in the Palm Beach Post in 1972, which helped fix that version as the popular template even though tiki-bar variations with additional fruit juices and rums have long coexisted. The cocktail joined the IBA's official New Era Drinks with the 2011 revision and was removed from the list in the 2024 update.

FAQ

What is in a Yellow Bird cocktail?

A Yellow Bird mixes light gold rum and white rum with banana liqueur, Galliano L'Autentico, fresh orange juice, pineapple juice, and fresh lime juice, shaken and fine-strained into a Collins glass. It is garnished with a pineapple wedge and a maraschino cherry, and comes in at about 13.8% ABV.

How do you make a Yellow Bird drink?

Pre-chill a Collins glass, then shake the light gold rum, white rum, banana liqueur, Galliano L'Autentico, orange juice, pineapple juice, and lime juice hard with ice. Fine-strain into the chilled glass and garnish with a pineapple wedge and a maraschino cherry on a skewer.

What's the best rum for a Yellow Bird?

This recipe uses a blend of light gold rum and white rum, which gives a rounder base than white rum alone while keeping the drink light rather than heavy. The gold rum's mild molasses note complements the banana liqueur and Galliano without overpowering the citrus and pineapple.
