How it's used
Bartenders pour it as a floral sweetening modifier, stirred or shaken into a build in small measures to lend elderflower aroma and body; at larger doses it can carry a drink as a primary flavour. Because its whole purpose is that blossom note, it is not readily swapped out when the flavour is the point.
Substitutes for Elderflower liqueur
No substitute truly replaces it when the elderflower aroma is central, since that specific floral note cannot be reproduced from an unrelated sweet liqueur; as a minor accent, another floral liqueur of comparable sweetness can stand in, with sugar and strength rebalanced by a syrup or spirit.
Often confused with
Elderflower liqueur is an alcoholic, spirit-based product, whereas elderflower cordial and syrup are non-alcoholic sweetened flavourings. Both are made by steeping elder blossoms in sugar and share the same floral flavour, so they are often confused or used interchangeably in error.
