Substitutes for Ginger beer
Heat and sweetness together with gas, and the substitutes are milder in the first — expect to add fresh ginger or a ginger syrup to bring the bite back. Sugar is the other variable and it runs high in this category.
Often confused with
Ginger ale is carbonated water with ginger flavoring; ginger beer is brewed or fermented from the root, which is where its body and heat come from. In a Mule the ale version leaves the drink sweet and quiet, with nothing to answer the lime.
Description
Traditional ginger beer is fermented and keeps a little alcohol, while the modern kind is simply carbonated under pressure. The label shows it as "under 0.5%".
Storage
Refrigerate after opening and use promptly, as carbonation is lost once the seal is broken.
