Vanilla vodka is a neutral vodka flavored with vanilla, giving it a sweet, aromatic character distinct from the raw spirit.
Another vanilla vodka works one for one. Most vanilla vodkas carry almost no sugar, Absolut Vanilia included, so plain vodka with a few drops of vanilla extract per 50 ml comes close. If the recipe calls for sugar syrup, vanilla syrup in its place brings the vanilla back as well.
Half the strength and far sweeter: Massenez's is 20% with about 180 g of sugar per liter. Replace only part of the vodka with it, and cut any syrup.
Of the flavored vodkas this is the durable one. Vanillin is a stable compound, so an opened bottle keeps its character far longer than a citrus or berry vodka will. Ordinary shelf storage, closed, out of the sun.
