A frozen riff on the Margarita, the Jägerita blends German herbal amaro such as Jägermeister with triple sec, lime, and sugar syrup over crushed ice. Herbal and bittersweet, the amaro's medicinal bite softens into a slushy, tart-sweet body with a clean lime finish.
The Frozen Jägerita is a blended version of the Jägerita, a Margarita riff that swaps tequila for Jägermeister. The Jägerita itself was created in 2008 by David Cordoba at a London bar event known as the Cabinet Room, where Portland bartender Jeffrey Morgenthaler was among the industry guests who tried it and later wrote about the drink, helping spread it to American bars. In 2014, Cordoba turned his own creation into a frozen cocktail for the menu at 28 HongKong Street, the Singapore bar he helped open, giving rise to the Frozen Jägerita.
The Jägerita is itself a variation on the Margarita, whose own origin is disputed among several rival claimants from 1930s and 1940s Mexico and the United States. The Frozen Jägerita's defining twist is substituting the German herbal liqueur Jägermeister for tequila while blending the drink into a frozen, slushy form rather than serving it on the rocks.
A Jägerita is a frozen Margarita riff that swaps the tequila for a German herbal amaro like Jägermeister, blended with crushed ice until slushy. It comes in at about 19% ABV and roughly 230 calories per serving, and it's vegan, vegetarian, and lactose-free.
Pre-chill a glass, then blend the German amaro, triple sec, lime juice, and sugar syrup with a two-thirds-full scoop of crushed ice until smooth. Pour into the chilled glass and garnish with a lime wheel.
A classic frozen Margarita is tequila, triple sec, and lime juice blended with ice until slushy. The Jägerita follows the same frozen-sour structure but replaces the tequila with a German herbal amaro such as Jägermeister, and this build adds a touch of sugar syrup to balance the lime.
A lime wheel is the standard garnish for a Jägerita, echoing the lime juice in the drink and adding a bright citrus aroma to each sip.
