The Ginger Margarita is a spicy tequila sour — a Margarita variation of reposado tequila, ginger liqueur, lime, and lemon, shaken and served over ice. Warm ginger heat meets bright lime and lemon over an oaky reposado base, finishing crisp and gently sweet — a lively aperitif or warm-weather sipper.
The Ginger Margarita is a contemporary riff on the classic Margarita template, with no single documented creator. Ginger enters the build in different ways across published versions — muddled fresh root, a ginger liqueur (as here), or a ginger-beer top — in recipes ranging from spirits brands' own specs to home-cocktail writers' takes, all keeping the tequila-lime sour structure while adding the warming spice.
A Ginger Margarita is reposado tequila, ginger liqueur, and freshly squeezed lime juice, with a little lemon juice and agave syrup for balance. This version adds two dashes of ginger bitters and is served over ice with a ginger slice. Other recipes use ginger syrup or ginger beer instead of the liqueur.
Shaken. Combine the tequila, ginger liqueur, lime and lemon juice, agave syrup, and ginger bitters in a shaker with ice, shake until cold, then strain over fresh ice. Shaking chills and lightly aerates the citrus for a brighter drink.
An old-fashioned (rocks) glass over ice, garnished with a slice of fresh ginger. It is served on the rocks rather than up, so a short tumbler holds the ice and the drink comfortably.
The 3-2-1 rule is a classic Margarita ratio of three parts tequila, two parts orange liqueur, and one part lime juice. It is a starting point, not a fixed law; a Ginger Margarita departs from it by swapping in ginger liqueur and adding lemon and a touch of agave.
Ginger pairs well with aged spirits like reposado tequila, dark and spiced rum, bourbon, and whiskey, whose warmth echoes its heat. In a Ginger Margarita, reposado's light oak sits behind the ginger liqueur, while vodka and gin also work in lighter, sharper ginger drinks.
