Gun Metal Blue

Shake ∙ 3 min ∙ 18.8% ABV ∙

The Gun Metal Blue is a shaken mezcal sour built with blue curaçao, lime, peach liqueur, and cinnamon syrup, served up in a coupe. Smoky and citrus-bright with a silky texture, this pours cool and tart before warm spice and orange oil linger on a smooth, lightly sweet finish.

Instructions for 1 serving

  1. Pre-chill a glass
  2. Shake all ingredients with ice: Mezcal 45 ml · Blue Curaçao 15 ml · Lime juice 25 ml · Crème de Pêche de Vigne liqueur 10 ml · Cinnamon syrup 10 ml
  3. Strain into the chilled glass
  4. Express an orange twist (coin sized) over the cocktail and float as garnish

Tips

  • Shake hard and fast — the cinnamon syrup is viscous and needs a vigorous shake to fully integrate rather than pooling at the bottom.
  • Measure the crème de pêche de vigne carefully; it's a small pour but its sweetness can easily overpower the mezcal's smoke.
  • Pre-chill the coupe before straining so the drink doesn't lose its chill before the orange oils are expressed over it.

History

The Gun Metal Blue was created in February 2015 by Mike Shain and Nicholas Bennett at Porchlight, a bar in New York City. It is a mezcal-based riff on the Margarita, swapping in blue curaçao, peach liqueur, and cinnamon syrup alongside lime juice for a smoky, spiced variation on the classic template. The drink was later featured in Robert Simonson's book Mezcal + Tequila Cocktails, which helped spread the recipe beyond its originating bar.
