Amaretto is a sweet Italian liqueur with a distinctive bitter-almond flavor. It originated in Saronno, where Disaronno and Lazzaroni are still made, but the style is now produced across Italy and beyond.

Substitutes for Amaretto liqueur
The marzipan note comes from benzaldehyde, and it is usually apricot kernels rather than almonds behind it — so what you are matching is a compound, not a nut. A plain syrup covers the sweetness and leaves the drink without its center.
Often confused with
Amaretto is a sweet almond-flavored liqueur; amaro is a bitter Italian liqueur made from herbs, roots and citrus peel. The names share the same Italian root (amaro, "bitter") but the drinks are unrelated in taste and use.
Crème de noyaux
The kernel note comes from the same compound, but this one is pink and less sweet. It colors a drink where amaretto would not. It swaps measure for measure and colors the drink, which matters in an Amaretto Sour and not at all in a Godfather.
Orgeat with a dash of brandy
Almond and sugar without the alcohol, so the brandy puts the strength back. Roughly two parts orgeat to one of brandy lands close; the drink comes out a shade nuttier and less bitter-almond.
