Jamaican aged rum is a pot-still, molasses-based rum matured in oak, prized for its bold, funky ester character.
The funk is the ester load, not the age and not the strength — which is why weight alone does not carry it. Outside the island style nothing else has it.
The funk comes from high-ester distillation rather than from age, so any Jamaican holds the character, and a younger one reads sharper; the barrel sweetness has to come back with syrup.
It matches the weight and the age and goes quiet on the esters; the drink holds together and loses exactly the note the Jamaican was chosen for.
The funk is made in a long ferment with dunder — what is left from the last distillation — and that is where the fruity esters come from.
