How it's used
Poured as the base measure, it anchors a build with cask-derived weight and sweetness and is stirred or shaken depending on the other components. Because many bottlings are sweetened and caramel-coloured beyond what age alone implies, they can push a drink sweeter and darker, so the rest of the build is balanced accordingly.

Often confused with
Aged rum has spent an extended period in wood, gaining colour, body and wood-derived aroma; white rum is unaged or lightly aged and charcoal-filtered to strip colour, leaving a lighter, cleaner spirit. Both share the same base distillate — the difference is maturation, not raw material.
