Light gold rum is a rum aged briefly in oak barrels, placing it in color and character between unaged white rum and richer dark rum.

Substitutes for Light gold rum
Any other light gold rum swaps straight in. Without one, white rum or an aged Caribbean rum works one for one. White rum makes the drink lighter and paler, aged rum rounder and a shade darker. Dark rum changes the drink more: it is usable, but molasses and spice take over and the color turns much darker.

- The least reliable word on a rum label. The color can come from oak or from caramel added at the end, and in the glass the two are indistinguishable — without an age statement it tells you nothing about time in wood.
