How it's used
Poured as the base measure, it supplies clean, colourless strength and a subtle cane character without dominating other components; it stirs, shakes or builds equally well and, being deliberately mild, is favoured for mixing over neat drinking.
Substitutes for White rum
Light gold rum is the closest swap — the same cane spirit at comparable strength and light body — though it adds a little barrel tint and oak flavour, so a drink relying on a colourless, neutral base will pick up some colour and character.

Gold / aged rum
White rum is clear and light-flavoured, whether unaged or aged then filtered clear; gold and aged rum retain barrel colour and carry more oak-derived flavour and body. Colour is an unreliable guide to age, since clear rum can be aged-then-filtered and gold rum can be coloured.
