Peated single malt whisky is a single malt whose malted barley has been dried with peat smoke, giving the spirit a smoky, phenolic character.

Smoke leads the aroma — medicinal, tarry, phenolic — over a medium-bodied malt with a low bitterness and a long, ashy finish.
How it's used
Poured as a base measure, it carries the drink on its smoke, which is the whole point and cannot be dialled back; as a small accenting pour it lends its phenolic aroma to a build, and because that smoke is aromatically dominant even a modest measure can overwhelm lighter ingredients, so it behaves as a leading flavour rather than a background one.
Substitutes for Peated single malt whisky
When it is the base measure the peat smoke is the signature and cannot be swapped away; as a small modifier its smoke can be partly approximated by a smaller pour of another peated malt. Strength and body can be matched by another 40%+ pot-still single malt, but the peat aroma itself is reproducible only from within the peated-whisky family.

Both are single malts distilled from 100% malted barley at one distillery; the peated version uses malt kiln-dried over peat smoke, adding a smoky phenolic character that is absent in unpeated malt.
