Tips

Give it a hard 12–15 second shake with fresh ice, so the 30 ml of blood orange juice mixes fully into the equal parts of Scotch, cherry liqueur and vermouth.
Keep the peated single malt to exactly 5 ml; it's there for a thread of smoke under the cherry and citrus, not to take over.

History

Bloody Blood and Sand is a variation on the Blood and Sand made with blood orange juice in place of regular orange juice. It also adds a portion of peated single malt whisky alongside the blended Scotch, giving the classic a smokier edge.

The Blood and Sand is a Scotch whisky cocktail whose recipe first appeared in Harry Craddock's 1930 Savoy Cocktail Book in London. It is widely said to take its name from Blood and Sand, the 1922 silent film starring Rudolph Valentino as a bullfighter; who created it remains undocumented, and Craddock is generally credited only as its first publisher.
