Light gold rum is a rum aged briefly in oak barrels, placing it in color and character between unaged white rum and richer dark rum.
The oak here is a thin layer, so the choice is how much of it to keep: less makes the drink cleaner and paler, more makes it heavier and darker. Strength stays the same either way, which is why this is the easiest rum swap on the shelf.
Bottled clear, either unaged or aged and filtered back. It pours cleaner and paler, so a drink built on the light oak layer loses it without gaining anything.
Longer in heavily charred wood or caramel-colored, so molasses and spice come forward; in a highball it darkens the drink and takes over the mixer.
