Tequila reposado is a Mexican blue-agave spirit rested in oak for an intermediate period, between unaged blanco and the longer-aged añejo.

Cooked blue agave dominates, wrapped in a light overlay of oak and mild vanilla, with a rounded body and low bitterness.
How it's used
Reached for when a drink wants agave character with a touch of barrel roundness rather than the sharper edge of blanco, it serves as the base measure and is stirred, shaken, or built at full strength; in delicate builds its oak-agave balance, not just its proof, is the thing to preserve.
Substitutes for Tequila reposado
Tequila blanco keeps the identical blue-agave aroma and strength but loses the oak colour, vanilla and rounder body, reading sharper and more vegetal; tequila añejo keeps the agave and adds barrel character, though its heavier oak and tannin can overwhelm a build balanced for reposado's lighter touch. A non-agave spirit fails entirely at base volume.
Often confused with
Blanco is unaged, or rested under the reposado minimum, and clear; reposado is oak-aged for an intermediate period, giving it a pale golden colour and wood character. The only difference is oak maturation time.
