Orange curaçao is a sweetened orange liqueur, flavored mainly with the dried peel of the laraha — a bitter orange grown on the Caribbean island of Curaçao.
Grand Marnier, which is cognac-based, is closest in weight and swaps in one for one. A triple sec such as Cointreau works too, with a drier, plainer orange note. Blue curaçao tastes much the same but turns the drink blue. Orange juice is not a substitute: it has far less sugar and no alcohol, and the drink comes out watery and sour.

Orange liqueur on a neutral spirit base.
Brandy-based orange liqueurs
Grand Marnier and similar liqueurs are built on aged brandy.
The liqueur itself is clear: blue, orange or green curaçao is coloring rather than a separate flavor.
