Passion fruit is the edible fruit of the tropical vine Passiflora edulis, its interior packed with seeds each wrapped in a sac of pulpy juice.

How it's used
Scooped seeds and pulp finish a drink as a textural, aromatic garnish, or the strained juice serves as a fruit-forward souring and flavouring base; purchased purée and concentrate are often pre-sweetened and de-seeded, shifting sugar balance and texture against fresh scooped pulp.
Substitutes for Passion fruit
As a defining flavour base it is effectively not substitutable — its musky-tropical aroma has no equivalent in other common fruits, and only another passion fruit product (fresh pulp, unsweetened purée, or concentrate) preserves it; sweetness and acidity can be rebuilt separately with syrup or citrus, but that shifts the profile. As a mere garnish it can be omitted or swapped for another tropical fruit.

Standard passion fruit is Passiflora edulis; several other Passiflora species sold as granadilla, sweet granadilla or giant granadilla are sweeter and milder, and are distinct fruits rather than the same product.
