Hot Shot

Layer ∙ 2 min ∙ 14.1% ABV ∙

The Hot Shot is a layered hot shooter of Galliano L'Autentico, hot filter coffee, and whipping cream, served warm in a shot glass. Warm anise-vanilla liqueur rises through bitter coffee before a cool cream layer softens the finish into something closer to a warm dessert than a drink.

Ingredients

Servings
  • Galliano L’Autentico liqueurGalliano L’Autentico liqueur15 ml
  • Filter coffee (hot)Filter coffee (hot)15 ml
  • Whipping creamWhipping cream15 ml

Instructions for 1 serving

  1. Pre-heat a glass
  2. Carefully layer in the warmed glass in the following order: Galliano L’Autentico liqueur 15 ml · Filter coffee 15 ml · Whipping cream 15 ml

Tips

  • Pre-warm the shot glass with hot water and dry it completely before layering, since a cold glass causes the coffee layer to cool and fracture the float.
  • Whip the cream to a loose, pourable consistency and float it slowly over the spoon so it sits on top instead of sinking into the coffee.
  • Build and serve immediately after layering while the glass is still warm, since the cream layer separates and slides if the shot sits too long.

History

The Hot Shot is a Swedish creation attributed to bartender Bosse Bergström, who devised it for a coffee drink competition held in Stockholm in 1987. His original entry used Anisette rather than Galliano; after the contest, the anise liqueur was swapped for Galliano, and the resulting layered shot of Galliano, hot filter coffee, and cream took hold under the Hot Shot name. The drink spread quickly across Sweden and beyond in the late 1980s and 1990s, becoming closely associated with the Galliano brand, which later featured a Hot Shot glass and spoon with its bottles sold in some markets.

FAQ

What is in a Hot Shot?

A Hot Shot is three layers built in a warmed shot glass: Galliano L'Autentico liqueur on the bottom, hot filter coffee in the middle, and whipping cream floated on top.

How do you make a Hot Shot?

Pre-heat a shot glass, then carefully layer in the Galliano L'Autentico liqueur first, followed by hot filter coffee, and finish with a float of whipping cream on top. Pouring slowly and in that order is what keeps the three layers separate rather than mixing into one.

What alcohol is in a Hot Shot?

The only spirit is Galliano L'Autentico, an Italian herbal liqueur with anise and vanilla notes; the rest of the drink is hot coffee and cream. It comes to about 14.1% ABV once the coffee and cream are added.

What is a Hot Shot at a bar?

It is a small hot shooter served in a shot glass rather than a mixed drink in a rocks glass or coupe. The warmed glass and hot coffee layer make it a warm-drink shot, typically ordered after dinner or in cold weather rather than sipped slowly.
