Absinthe is a high-proof spirit flavored with wormwood, fennel, and various herbs. Originating in Switzerland in the late 18th century, it became extremely popular in France during the 19th century. It was banned in many countries for decades due to its high alcohol content and mythologized effects. Known as “the green fairy,” absinthe has a complex, herbal flavor profile and a slight anise licorice note. It is traditionally diluted with water, often over a sugar cube. Its high alcohol content gives it an almost indefinite shelf life if stored in a cool, dark place.
Herbal, anise-forward, slightly bitter.
Enjoy diluted with water or in classic cocktails like the Sazerac, Corpse Reviver #2, or Death in the Afternoon. Can also be used to aroma a glass, mist over cocktails, or add herbal complexity to experimental drinks.
