Orange curaçao is a sweetened orange liqueur, flavoured mainly with the dried peel of the laraha — a bitter orange grown on the Caribbean island of Curaçao.
Fragrant bitter-orange peel over a sweet body, with more depth and a faint bitter edge than a clear triple sec. Brandy- or rum-based bottlings add extra warmth and spice.
Orange curaçao sweetens and scents a drink at once. It's the orange note in a Mai Tai and a Sidecar, added in small measures. Drier, less sugary styles suit modern recipes; coloured versions also tint the glass — blue curaçao is what turns a Blue Lagoon blue.
Another orange liqueur is the natural swap. A clear triple sec works but is lighter, drier and adds no colour, so top up the sweetness with simple syrup if needed. A brandy-based orange liqueur like Grand Marnier is a richer, closer match. Plain orange juice can't stand in for it.
Triple sec
Triple sec is usually a clear liqueur, made by distilling sweet and bitter orange peel in neutral spirit. Curaçao is traditionally made with dried laraha peel, tastes deeper and more of bitter orange, and often comes dyed — including blue. In practice many bottles labelled 'triple sec' and 'curaçao' overlap.
The laraha is a bitter orange that grows poorly in Curaçao's soil, turning nearly inedible but intensely fragrant; its sun-dried peel gives the liqueur its scent. The spirit itself is clear, but it's often dyed — blue, orange, green or red — and the famous blue curaçao is pure colour, not extra flavour.
Curaçao is named after the Caribbean island where its laraha oranges grow.
