Blackberry Agave Caipirinha

Muddle ∙ 3 min ∙ 21.1% ABV ∙

A Blackberry Agave Caipirinha muddles fresh lime and blackberries with agave syrup and cachaça, a fruited spin on Brazil's national cachaça cocktail. Muddled blackberries add a jammy sweetness against sharp lime, while the agave rounds cachaça's grassy bite into a smooth, fruit-forward finish.

  • Fresh limeFresh lime1 pc
  • Fresh blackberriesFresh blackberries6 pcs
  • Agave syrupAgave syrup30 ml
  • CachaçaCachaça60 ml

Garnish

  • StirrerStirrer

Instructions for 1 serving

  1. Pre-chill a glass
  2. Cut half a Fresh lime into wedges and drop into a sturdy rocks glass
  3. Muddle gently
  4. Add Fresh blackberries 6 pcs and muddle again
  5. Once the juices are extracted, transfer the mixture to the serving glass
  6. Add Agave syrup 30 ml to the serving glass
  7. Pour Cachaça 60 ml into the muddling glass, swirl to rinse, and pour into the serving glass
  8. Stir to combine
  9. Crack 4-5 large ice cubes and drop into the serving glass
  10. Stir, top with more ice, and serve with a stirrer (but no straws)

Tips

  • Crack four or five large cubes as the card does rather than reaching for crushed ice, then stir — the slower melt keeps the fruit from washing out.
  • Cut the lime into 6-8 small wedges before muddling so the juice and oils release evenly without pulverizing the peel.
  • Add the cachaça and agave syrup after muddling, then fill the highball with crushed or small cubed ice and swizzle to distribute the fruit.
  • Serve with a stirrer rather than straining, letting muddled blackberry pulp and lime settle through the glass as the drink dilutes.

History

The Caipirinha is Brazil's national cocktail, and while its exact beginning is not settled, the academic consensus places its invention in the interior of São Paulo state in 1918. Many accounts tie it specifically to Piracicaba, where it is said to have been mixed as a home remedy of cachaça, lime, garlic, and honey during the Spanish flu epidemic before evolving into the lime-and-sugar drink known today. A rival theory traces a similar cachaça, lemon, garlic, and honey remedy to the same year in the Alentejo region of Portugal, and some historians instead link the drink's roots to Poncha, an older alcoholic drink from Madeira. The name comes from "caipira," a term for someone from the Brazilian countryside. The Blackberry Agave Caipirinha is a variation on this classic built around cachaça, lime, and sugar, replacing the traditional sugar with agave syrup and muddling in fresh blackberries for a fruited version of the original.
