Melon and Apple Caipirinha

A fruity, bubbly and sour cachaça cocktail ∙ Muddle ∙ 3 min ∙ 17.9% ABV ∙

The Melon and Apple Caipirinha is a muddled cachaça sour that adds fresh melon and unsweetened apple cider alongside the classic's lime and sugar. Cracked ice keeps every sip cold and diluted just enough, while the muddled fruit lends a soft, pulpy sweetness against a crisp, tart finish.

  • Powdered sugarPowdered sugar3 bsp
  • Melon (Cantaloupe)Melon (Cantaloupe)1 slice

Instructions for 1 serving

  1. Pre-chill a glass
  2. Cut half a Fresh lime into wedges and drop into the glass
  3. Add Powdered sugar 3 bsp (or 15 ml sugar syrup) and muddle
  4. Add Melon 1 slice and muddle again
  5. Add Cachaça 60 ml and Apple cider (unsweetened) 30 ml, and stir until the sugar dissolves
  6. Fill the glass with crushed ice and stir
  7. Top with more crushed ice and serve with a stirrer

Tips

  • Muddle the melon gently after the sugar dissolves — overworking it turns the drink cloudy and pulpy rather than juicy.

History

The Melon and Apple Caipirinha is a fruit-forward spin on Brazil's national cocktail, replacing part of the classic muddled lime with cantaloupe melon and swapping the sugarcane spirit's usual neat pour for a splash of apple, giving the drink a sweeter, orchard-fruit character alongside the traditional lime and cachaça base. No individual bartender or bar is credited with creating this variation; it belongs to the broad family of fruit caipirinhas that emerged as the drink spread beyond Brazil.

The Caipirinha itself is generally traced to the interior of São Paulo state, Brazil, where landowning farmers are thought to have mixed cachaça with lime and sugar, with some accounts tracing an early version to around 1918 as a home remedy using lime, garlic, and honey before sugar replaced those ingredients. Brazilian law and the International Bartenders Association restrict the name Caipirinha to the lime-and-cachaça original, so fruit versions like this one are typically classed as caipifrutas, using another fruit in place of or alongside the lime.

FAQ

What alcohol is in a Melon and Apple Caipirinha?

Cachaça is the only alcohol in this drink, muddled with lime and melon and rounded out with unsweetened apple cider for a fruitier, lower-proof take on the classic Caipirinha.

Is a Caipirinha stronger than a Mojito?

A classic Caipirinha is typically stronger than a Mojito, since it is built almost entirely on spirit with only lime and sugar to soften it, while a Mojito is lengthened with soda water. This Melon and Apple Caipirinha comes in at about 17.9% ABV, milder than a classic Caipirinha, since the apple cider adds volume without added alcohol.

What fruits are good for a Caipirinha?

Lime is the traditional fruit, and this recipe adds muddled cantaloupe melon plus unsweetened apple cider for extra fruit character.

Do apple and melon go together?

Yes, apple and melon are a common pairing because the apple's tartness cuts through melon's ripe sweetness rather than competing with it. In this cocktail, unsweetened apple cider plays that role against muddled cantaloupe.
