Brasil Cocktail

Shake ∙ 3 min ∙ 21.1% ABV ∙

The Brasil Cocktail is a shaken sour of cachaça, herbal liqueur, lemon juice, and sugar syrup, served over ice and finished with basil. Grassy cachaça and cool basil ride over a bittersweet herbal backbone, with tart lemon keeping the finish crisp rather than cloying.

Instructions for 1 serving

  1. Pre-chill a glass
  2. Shake all ingredients with ice: Cachaça 40 ml · Herbal liqueur (e.g., Yellow Chartreuse) 20 ml · Lemon juice 25 ml · Sugar syrup 10 ml
  3. Strain into the ice-filled glass
  4. Garnish with a basil sprig

Tips

  • Shake all four ingredients hard for a full 12-15 seconds; the cachaça, the herbal liqueur and the citrus need vigorous dilution to soften the liqueur's intensity.
  • Strain over fresh cubed ice rather than crushed, so the drink stays properly cold without watering down too fast.
  • Slap the basil sprig sharply between the palms before placing it on top to release its oils, then set it near the rim so the aroma hits first.
  • Measure the herbal liqueur at half the cachaça volume; adding more overwhelms the citrus-syrup balance and pushes the drink too bitter-sweet.

History

The Brasil is a modern cocktail credited to Will Ballantine, bar manager at Wild by Tart in London, who created it in May 2021. The drink pairs cachaça with yellow Chartreuse, lemon juice, and sugar syrup.
