Coconut Rum Punch

Shake ∙ 3 min ∙ 12.1% ABV ∙

A Coconut Rum Punch is a shaken highball of overproof white rum, coconut syrup, coconut water, and fresh lime, served long in a Collins glass. Coconut washes over the palate first, sweet and rounded, before lime cuts in and the overproof rum leaves a warm, lingering heat on the finish.

  • Coconut syrupCoconut syrup20 ml
  • Coconut waterCoconut water90 ml
  • Lime juice (freshly squeezed)Lime juice (freshly squeezed)15 ml

Garnish

  • Dehydrated coconut flakesDehydrated coconut flakes

Instructions for 1 serving

  1. Pre-chill a glass
  2. Shake all ingredients with ice: White overproof rum 45 ml · Coconut syrup 20 ml · Coconut water 90 ml · Lime juice 15 ml
  3. Strain into the ice-filled glass
  4. Garnish with a dehydrated coconut flake
  5. Note: Can be scaled up and served from a punch bowl or a large pitcher

Tips

  • Toast the dehydrated coconut flakes lightly before garnishing — it deepens the aroma without adding any more sweetness.
  • Strain over fresh ice in a Collins glass rather than the shaker ice, since overproof rum and coconut water dilute quickly and old ice waters down the drink.
  • Squeeze the lime juice fresh just before shaking; bottled juice turns flat against the 90 ml of coconut water and mutes the citrus lift.

History

Rum punch traces back to punch itself, a drink first recorded in English in 1632 and traced by drinks historian David Wondrich to British East India Company traders in India, where a 1638 account describes workers in Surat mixing a spirit-based drink with citrus, sugar, water, and spice. The name is popularly said to derive from the Hindi word for "five," reflecting those five traditional components, though Wondrich himself notes this etymology may be an unverified guess. As British sailors carried the practice across the Atlantic, rum from Jamaica and Barbados replaced the original arrack base by the mid-1600s, and Caribbean rum punch developed its own regional formula, often summarized in the Barbadian rhyme calling for one part sour, two parts sweet, three parts strong (rum), and four parts weak (water). This Coconut Rum Punch follows that same sour-sweet-strong-weak Caribbean punch structure but replaces the traditional water and plain sweetener with coconut water and coconut syrup, giving the drink its tropical, coconut-forward character.
