Honey Cobbler

Shake ∙ 3 min ∙ 20.7% ABV ∙

The Honey Cobbler is a shaken whisky drink blending Scotch, red wine, crème de cassis, and honey syrup, strained over crushed ice. Smoky Scotch meets dark red-wine fruit, with a honeyed sweetness and a blackcurrant edge softening into a cool, crushed-ice finish.

Ingredients

Servings
  • Blended Scotch whiskyBlended Scotch whisky45 ml
  • Red wineRed wine30 ml
  • Crème de CassisCrème de Cassis10 ml
  • Honey syrupHoney syrup10 ml

Garnish

  • Mint sprigMint sprig

Instructions for 1 serving

  1. Pre-chill a glass
  2. Shake all ingredients with ice: Blended Scotch whisky 45 ml · Red wine 30 ml · Crème de Cassis 10 ml · Honey syrup 10 ml
  3. Strain into the glass filled with crushed ice
  4. Serve with a straw
  5. Garnish with a mint sprig

Tips

  • Pre-chill the glass so the crushed ice stays firm and the drink doesn't dilute before serving.
  • Add the mint sprig only after straining; bruising it into the shake would turn the drink cloudy and grassy.
  • Shake hard and briefly — the red wine and cassis need to blend fully with the whisky before straining over crushed ice.

History

The Honey Cobbler has no documented creation story of its own; it is a named variation within the Cobbler family, built around Scotch whisky, red wine, and honey rather than the category's original wine base.

The Cobbler itself is an American drink first documented in the early 19th century, its earliest known mention traced to an 1838 diary entry by a Canadian traveler, with the Sherry Cobbler becoming its most famous form after Charles Dickens featured one in his 1843–44 novel Martin Chuzzlewit. Built simply from sherry, sugar, and citrus over crushed ice and sipped through a straw, the Sherry Cobbler helped popularize the drinking straw itself and spawned numerous spin-offs using other wines and spirits through the mid-to-late 1800s. The Honey Cobbler follows that same shaken, crushed-ice format but substitutes a smoky Scotch-and-red-wine base sweetened with honey in place of the original sherry-and-sugar build.
