Bénédictine is a brandy-based herbal liqueur flavoured with a secret blend of 27 herbs, roots, flowers, berries and spices.
Honeyed and rounded, layered with warm baking spice, resinous herbs and a saffron-and-citrus lift over a spirit-forward body.
Contributing honeyed sweetness and multi-botanical aroma, it works as a flavouring modifier stirred or shaken into a build in small measures rather than as a base pour, seasoning a spirit with herbal complexity.
Another French herbal liqueur of comparable structure approximates it, delivering similar aromatic complexity and a sweet, spirit-forward body — though the distinctive honeyed roundness is lost, so a more herbaceous, drier substitute needs its sweetness rebalanced with sugar or honey syrup. The proprietary honeyed 27-botanical aroma cannot be truly matched.
B&B (Bénédictine and Brandy)
B&B is Bénédictine blended with brandy to produce a drier, less sweet product, while standard Bénédictine is the sweeter, unblended liqueur. Both come from the same producer and share near-identical branding and the Bénédictine name.
Bénédictine is built from several separate distillations of botanical infusions that are blended into a finished recipe kept as a commercial secret. Of its 27 botanicals, 21 are publicly disclosed — among them angelica, hyssop, juniper, myrrh, saffron, mace, coriander, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, honey and red berries. It contains honey and is a sweet liqueur; a drier expression, B&B, was created in response to a shift in taste toward less sweet liqueurs.
Bénédictine was developed by wine merchant Alexandre Le Grand at Fécamp in Normandy, France, in 1863, from old medicinal recipes; Le Grand marketed it with a story attributing it to monks of the Benedictine Abbey of Fécamp and placed the abbreviation 'D.O.M.' (Deo Optimo Maximo) on the label.
