Final Ward

Shake ∙ 3 min ∙ 24% ABV ∙

The Final Ward is an equal-parts shaken sour of rye whiskey, herbal liqueur, maraschino liqueur, and lemon juice, served up in a coupe. Rye's spice leads, herbal liqueur adds a cool green bite, and maraschino's cherry sweetness meets tart lemon in a crisp, bracing finish.

Instructions for 1 serving

  1. Pre-chill a glass
  2. Shake all ingredients with ice: Rye whiskey 20 ml · Herbal liqueur (e.g., Green Chartreuse) 20 ml · Maraschino liqueur 20 ml · Lemon juice 20 ml
  3. Fine strain into the chilled glass
  4. Express a lemon twist over the cocktail and use as garnish

Tips

  • Measure all four components equally since the Final Ward is a true equal-parts build; even small excess of Chartreuse or maraschino unbalances it.
  • Shake hard with plenty of ice for a full 12-15 seconds; the citrus and heavier liqueurs need vigorous agitation to chill and dilute properly.
  • Double strain through a fine mesh strainer into the chilled coupe to catch ice shards and keep the surface clean for the lemon twist.
  • Express the lemon twist's oils over the drink's surface before dropping it in, rather than just laying it on the rim, for aromatic lift.

History

The Final Ward is a variation on the Last Word, a gin cocktail most often traced to Detroit's pre-Prohibition Detroit Athletic Club and revived in the 2000s by Seattle bartender Murray Stenson. Bartender Phil Ward created this rye-based riff in 2007, swapping in rye whiskey for the gin and lemon juice for the lime; most accounts place its creation at Death & Co in New York, though Ward himself has said it actually happened earlier, while he was still at the Pegu Club. The name plays on its lineage — Last Word becomes Final Word, and Word becomes Ward, after its creator's surname.

FAQ

What is in a Final Ward?

Equal parts rye whiskey, an herbal liqueur such as green Chartreuse, maraschino liqueur, and fresh lemon juice, shaken and served up in a coupe with a lemon twist.

Is a Final Ward shaken or stirred?

Shaken. The lemon juice needs the aeration and quick chill of a shake, which also softens the four equal-strength spirits and liqueurs into a cohesive drink.

How is a Final Ward different from a Last Word?

A Final Ward swaps the Last Word's gin for rye whiskey, giving it a spicier, warmer backbone while keeping the same equal-parts structure of herbal liqueur, maraschino, and citrus.
