The Between the Sheets – IBA is a shaken sour of equal parts white rum, Cognac and triple sec with fresh lemon juice, served up in a cocktail glass.

- Pre-chill a glass
- Shake all ingredients with ice: White rum 30 mlCognac 30 mlTriple sec 30 mlLemon juice 20 ml
- Strain into the chilled cocktail glass
Tips
- That is three 30 ml pours of spirit and liqueur to 20 ml of lemon juice, so shake hard on plenty of fresh ice for a full 12-15 seconds. It needs the extra chill and water.
- Keep the rum, cognac and triple sec at exactly 30 ml each; none of them is meant to lead.
History
The Between the Sheets – IBA is the International Bartenders Association's specification of the Between the Sheets. It follows the drink's later-standardized build: white rum, cognac, and triple sec in equal parts with lemon juice, shaken and strained into a cocktail glass.
The drink is often credited to Harry MacElhone, the Scottish-born bartender at Harry's New York Bar in Paris, who is said to have created it as a Sidecar variation with less cognac and added rum. Rival accounts place it at London's Berkeley Hotel around 1921 or, in a less-documented story, in French brothels; its first appearance in print, in Frank Shay's 1929 Drawn from the Wood, used gin rather than brandy.
